The neighborhood Asian market North County didn’t have.
For years, finding fish sauce, fresh Thai basil, or a properly cut piece of pork belly in Escondido meant a 30+ minute drive south. Asian Market La Sorpresa Barata changed that.
Family-owned in Escondido since the 2000s, we stock the staples our neighbors actually cook with — across Vietnamese, Thai & Lao, Filipino, Korean, Japanese, and Chinese cuisines. Plus the produce, meat, and seafood that make those dishes sing.
We also carry staple Hispanic foods our neighbors shop for every week, including daily-fresh tortillas, dried chiles, and Mexican pantry essentials.

What we believe.
Community first
We’re a small business in Escondido, supporting the neighbors who built us into what we are.
Pan-Asian, not generic
Vietnamese, Thai, Filipino, Korean, Japanese, Chinese — each shelf curated by people who cook these foods at home.
Quality at fair prices
We compete on selection and quality. Prices are competitive with the bigger Asian markets — without the drive.
Real help, real expertise
Stuck on a recipe? Our team cooks. Ask anyone — we’ll point you to the right brand and the right cut.

The Songkran Festival & the Escondido Buddhist Temple.
Community is at the heart of what we do. We’re proud long-time supporters of cultural events in Escondido — celebrating the traditions that bring our neighbors together.
Our involvement with the Escondido Buddhist Temple and the annual Songkran (Thai New Year) Festival has been one of the most rewarding parts of being a part of this community since 2015 and before.
You’ll often find us at local food drives, school fundraisers, and cultural events around North County. Drop in and say hello — we’re always around.
